Small Connecticut Aerospace Players Look For Big Opportunities In Paris

Recently published in the WNPR (Connecticut's Public Media Source for News and Ideas) and written by Harriet Jones on June 20th 2017.

Fourteen small Connecticut aerospace companies are exhibiting their wares at the Paris Air Show this week. They join thousands of other businesses at the world’s biggest industry showcase.

All the major players -- the big airlines, aircraft companies, and engine makers -- strut their stuff at the European air show each year, showing off new products and making billions of dollars in deals.

“In all honesty, aerospace is a bit like a club," said Clive Cunliffe of New England Airfoil. "Everybody knows everybody, and you have to have that personal interface.”

Cunliffe's adopted company is a tiny business of just under 60 employees in Farmington. They too will be in Paris, courtesy of Connecticut’s Department of Economic and Community Development, which each year takes a booth at the air show.

Cunliffe said for him and the 13 other small Nutmeg companies sharing that stand, the results in terms of sales will be tangible.

“Inquiries that come in through the air show can take one to even three years to incubate, but unless you’ve got a presence at the Air Show, you’re not seen as a serious player in the aerospace business,” he told WNPR.

New England Airfoil itself was a failing business just a couple of years ago, when Italian forging company Pietra Rosa stopped by the Connecticut booth at the air show, looking to discuss gaining a foothold in North America.

Talks at the show eventually led to Pietra Rosa buying and reviving the Farmington-based company, which is now growing and adding employees.

DECD Commissioner Catherine Smith said boosting Connecticut’s aerospace supply chain is a good investment for the state.

“We’ve seen as many as a billion dollars of sales be made in one individual year from the companies we take with us," she said. "Last year I believe the number was right about $400 million, so this is a really productive opportunity for these companies.”

ACM Appoints a new President

Aerospace Component Manufactures (ACM)  Appoints NEAP Operations VP Max McIntyre as President  of the association

ACM PRESIDENT Max McIntyre.png

ACM comprises one of the largest, most experienced concentrations of world-class aerospace companies; as such we at NEAP are delighted and very proud that our VP –Operations Max McIntyre at the NEAP plant in Farmington has been appointed President of the ACM. Prior to being appointed President Max Served as a director in the cluster for six years and states:

“This organisation serves as a fantastic networking platform for Aerospace businesses in the community and combined enables a bigger voice for the manufactures that comprise its membership in all sorts of ways that give us and others huge benefits rather than standing alone is a sea of both threats and opportunities. “

ACM is a non-profit regional network of independent Connecticut and southwestern Massachusetts based aerospace companies. The cluster’s mission is to attract the global aerospace industry to the World's “Aerospace Alley!®,” where ACM member firms form a unique industrial cooperative of long-established aerospace manufacturers, processors and suppliers, offering a cost-effective supply chain that exceeds customer expectations.  Working together as a network, member companies collectively offer broader capabilities than they could as individuals.

ACM member companies are united by a single goal: Be the world leader in providing customers with aerospace components of unsurpassed quality, competitive prices and on-time delivery.

To achieve that goal, members of the cluster work with peers and with regional, national and international experts to ensure continuous improvement of products and services.

The cornerstone of the efforts deployed by the collective group is an aggressive program for adopting and implementing lean enterprise practices and conducting ongoing workforce training and development.

A BIGGER SLICE OF THE PIE!

Foreign Direct Investment Frontlines Coalition (FDI) cites NEAP as a glowing example of how US States are attracting and stimulating foreign investments.

The FDI Frontlines Coalition is a platform to educate state and local economic development organizations, governors, and mayors on how to build and maintain a welcoming and attractive business environment to global companies.

Through the FDI Frontlines Coalition, the Organization for International Investment (OFII) and its member companies, share best practices and insights into the best ways for state and local government to interact with the global business community. OFII is the only business association that exclusively represents the U.S. subsidiaries of foreign-headquartered companies. OFII’s mission is to work on state and federal policies that help the United States attract foreign direct investment.

This publication “FDI’s $400 Billion Secret” provides insights into how state and local government can respond to cross-border mergers and acquisitions. The Connecticut case study on “NEAP” highlights how one state (Connecticut) successfully responded and helped a global company enter its economy through an acquisition and be successful after the transaction.

NEAP celebrates a double step forward

NEAP LOGO.png

One more phase of the on-going NEAP refurbishments and plant modernisation in the re-birth of the business was celebrated on Thursday 26 January 2017 with the opening of its new engineering area and newly designed trademark logo, hence it was thought the perfect time to have a small celebration!

The new Engineering area, or more accurately an “integrated process team “area has been created to provide a brighter, fresher and more communicative environment to encourage new ideas, and thought processes to solve the complex requirements of advanced manufacturing. The new environment will also hopefully assist in attracting additional new talent from local universities and colleges as the company grows its headcount.

Clive Cunliffe, Corporate Strategy and Communications for Pietro Rosa Group is always happy to explain the offerings of the group as a whole.

NEAP participates at the hugely successful ACM Trade Show & Workforce Development Fair

November 9 2016 was date to remember, NEAP played its part in exhibiting amongst the many Aerospace Component Manufacturers who participated in the event. It proved another great opportunity to catch up with old friends and new, along with networking amongst the business community engaged in our industry sector. The trade show drew 200 plus business guests from 20 States and 6 different countries.

The morning session was certainly hectic, with over 875 students and teachers visited from 39 schools from the local communities, who flocked to the event filling the exhibition hall of the Hartford Convention Centre.

Young students showed great interest in the exhibitors products and career opportunities

Young students showed great interest in the exhibitors products and career opportunities

The students were keen and enthusiastic to understand what all aspects of manufacturing is really like in ‘Aerospace alley’, asking some great questions about how to enter engineering as a career path when the time comes. Many were inquisitive and took great interest about the products we make, how a gas turbine works and our products duty with the engine itself.  It was a very rewarding morning getting to know that the younger generation of the area is keen to enter our industry and give the vital lifeblood for future growth and success. Our thanks go out the schools, colleges and of course the teachers who enabled the young students to visit the event.

Many of the biggest OEM names in Aerospace from manufacturing and supply chain fields were represented at the show. Janet Duffey, Vice President, Supply Management, at Sikorsky Aircraft (a Lockheed-Martin company) gave a presentation towards the end of the day that was well received by all.

The State as ever gave tremendous support on the day with CT Governor Daniel Malloy, US Senator Richard Blumenthal and Commissioner Catherine Smith all giving speeches about our industry, its importance in Connecticut and the enthusiasm displayed by the young people at the start of the day They shared valuable words of encouragement about the present and future for our industry in the State.

This particular event was the first that NEAP has attended, but it will surely be on our calendar as an annual event from now on.

Our thanks go to the ACM for the organization of this event and the Convention center for making it a superb venue.
